NIFA celebrates 40 years of growing Nebraska communities

Nebraska Investment Finance Authority is proud to announce the celebration of its 40th anniversary this year. Since its establishment in 1983, NIFA has helped over 98,000 Nebraska households realize the dream of homeownership.

“Through our first-time home buyer and downpayment assistance programs and our recently-launched Welcome Home program aimed at repeat buyers, NIFA continues to grow Nebraska communities through affordable housing,” said executive director Shannon Harner.

The Nebraska Legislature created NIFA in 1983 to replace the Nebraska Mortgage Finance Fund, a source of mortgage financing at reduced interest rates for Nebraskans with low to moderate incomes.

In establishing NIFA, the Legislature also expanded the organization’s responsibilities to include providing reduced interest rate financing to beginning farmers and ranchers, allocating Low Income Housing Tax Credits, and providing community development programs.

“Since inception, NIFA’s beginning farmer and rancher loan program has extended more than $137 million in financing to establish new or expand existing agribusiness ventures in the state,” Harner said. “We’ve also extended more than $1.7 billion in low-income housing tax credits to increase the number of affordable rental housing units available in the state.”

“NIFA is also spearheading a statewide coalition of for-profit, nonprofit and government organizations to address the state’s housing crisis,” Harner said.

The coalition, called the Strategic Housing Council, developed and is currently implementing Nebraska’s Statewide Housing Framework, a set of shared priorities and strategies to increase affordable housing and reduce homelessness in the state.
