Highlighting Housing Authorities Recap

04/02/2021

NIFA Webinar Wednesdays – March 31, 2021 Highlighting Housing Authorities

Moderator: Heather Looper, Nebraska State Service Officer at the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO)

Speakers: Rita Grigg, Executive Director of the Fremont Housing Authority; Barry Hall, Executive Director of the Hall County Housing Authority; Joey Nathan, Executive Director of the Ponca Housing Authority; Susan Tatum, Tenant Services Manager of the Lincoln Housing Authority

Today’s panel of housing authority leaders took us through their programs, accomplishments, how the pandemic impacted their organizations, and what they are doing to continue serving their communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. Housing authority leaders from across the state had to battle the pandemic on many fronts, including the eviction moratorium, funding sources, preventing infection, and now vaccines. Our panelists went into detail regarding their journey, first when they were forced to close their offices to the public and then adapted to provide their services electronically. Next came the threat of eviction and the need for families to split up in order to protect vulnerable persons. The authorities changed their business models to fit the needs of their tenants and protect themselves and their employees. Housing authorities have acted as vital leaders and partners to tenants during this critical time.
